Common mistakes in Medical English. Even the best medical professionals can make mistakes when using English in a clinical setting. Join us as we explore some of the most common errors and how to avoid them, ensuring effective communication with patients, colleagues, and the broader medical communications.
Mispronunciations. Avoid miscommunications caused by improper pronunciation and stress patterns. Mispronunciation means the wrong act of pronouncing a word that changes its meaning. Sometimes the meaning of the word changes completely due to wrong pronunciation. So, it is necessary to fix your commonly mispronounced words.
It means to pronounce words incorrectly. It may be due to different reasons. Sometimes our tong slips and we pronounce incorrectly but it is not a big problem. But if you are in your senses and then you pronounce incorrectly and then thought that it is the correct pronunciation. You must spend some time improving your vocabulary.
Grammatical Errors. Correct sentence structure and grammar to convey accurate medical information. A grammatical error is a mistake based on prescriptive grammar that shows unconventional or faulty usage. Some examples include a misplaced modifier or dangling modifiers. Typographical errors are not grammatical errors because they do not show unconventional usage of English words. Instead, they are unintentional mistakes that occur when you accidentally type the wrong letter, number, or symbol on the keyboard.
Misusing Medical Terminilogy. Master the proper use of medical terminology to ensure clarity and precision. A medical Terminology is a group of words very commonly used in the field of healthcare to describe procedures, processes, diseases and disorders relating to the human body and living organisms in general. Medical terminology is a vast subject which entails all types of words used in the field of healthcare and medicine, thus it is next to impossible to know about each one of them
Metodology.
How we should teach Medical English
There are many specialized courses that lack careful methodological design. I encountered this when I was offered to teach the English in Medicine course. I literally had to assemble the program piece by piece from a variety of components, since I lacked the necessary materials and methodological support. The most incredible madness for me was to find recommendations in the style of “Just use the basis of General English, adding medical vocabulary.” This option, where I take the same New English File, thickly sprinkled with medical terminology, did not immediately suit me. Below I will share some considerations that will be useful to colleagues when teaching medical English.
Difficulties
As a rule, a student who needs medical English is either a university student or an already established professional whose collegial relationships are not limited to interaction with Russian employees. In both cases, the purpose of learning specialized English may be completely different. It is important to immediately define it in detail in order to understand what kind of bet you should make: communication skills or written English. The first difficulty you will most likely encounter is the costs of typical school and university study of English. The student will cope brilliantly with grammartranslation exercises. It will take a remarkable amount of effort to make a high-quality output of the exercises into speech. Moreover, it is very important to indicate the appropriateness of each topic, exercise and course as a whole. Contextualizing tasks, placing exercises in a specific communicative situation - this must be done from the very beginning if the student’s goal is precisely to gain the ability to speak this language.
Importance of English in Medicine
The importance of English language (EL) skills in medical education is demonstrated when students from multilingual backgrounds enrol into international medical programs (IMPs) . The past three decades have seen an increasing number of universities with global perspectives of health professions education offering IMPs . With IMPs, the curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment activities are conducted in English . EL serves as prerequisite for enrolment into IMPs which include assessments such as International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or its equivalent, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Originally, EL assessments were meant to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. Nevertheless, higher education institutions in Anglophone countries seem to have broadened the use of these assessments to gauge students’ academic performance.
English is an international language of medicine. It is also expanding as an international communication and educational tool. The literature emphasizes the importance of communication skills among medical practitioners as “effective doctorpatient communication is a crucial aspect of quality patient care”. However it is scarce in relation to the perception of medical students towards factors enhancing English language and communication skills. This particularly applies in multilingual environments and IMPs . Studies on medical students’ English language needs in Taiwanese higher education institutions were mostly concerning English language teaching. The study highlighted that although students value English proficiency in their training as medical doctors, universities failed to satisfy students’ expectations and facilitate attainment of language proficiency.
