Аннотация
ВВЕДЕНИЕ
интеграция цифровых технологий существенно изменила методику преподавания английского языка, способствуя развитию аутентичной коммуникации и обучению, ориентированному на обучающегося. Среди этих технологий подкастинг стал эффективным средством развития навыков аудирования, произношения, расширения словарного запаса, формирования коммуникативной компетенции и развития автономности обучающихся. В данном исследовании технические и дидактические особенности технологии подкастинга в обучении английскому языку рассматриваются с использованием описательного, сравнительного и аналитического методов исследования. Полученные результаты свидетельствуют о том, что подкастинг характеризуется аутентичностью, многофункциональностью, мобильностью, интерактивностью, медиаинтеграцией и многоканальным обучением, что способствует развитию как рецептивных, так и продуктивных языковых навыков. Сделан вывод, что систематическая интеграция подкастов в процесс обучения английскому языку способствует развитию автономности обучающихся, цифровой грамотности и коммуникативной компетенции, одновременно повышая учебную активность студентов и общую эффективность овладения иностранным языком.
ЦЕЛЬ
классификация и научно-методический анализ основных подходов к использованию технологии подкастинга в обучении английскому языку, а также оценка их эффективности в формировании коммуникативной компетенции учащихся.
МАТЕРИАЛЫ И МЕТОДЫ
в исследовании использованы методы описательного, сравнительного и теоретико-методологического анализа научной литературы на основе концепций «Входного материала» С. Крашена и «Когнитивной теории мультимедийного обучения» Р. Майера.
ОБСУЖДЕНИЕ И РЕЗУЛЬТАТЫ
выделены и систематизированы 8 ключевых технико-дидактических характеристик подкастов (аутентичность, мобильность, многофункциональность, интерактивность, многоканальность и др.) и 7 методических подходов к их внедрению в учебный процесс. Доказано, что использование подкастов не только совершенствует навыки аудирования и говорения, но и развивает критическое мышление, медиаграмотность и мотивацию обучающихся.
ЗАКЛЮЧЕНИЕ
систематическая интеграция подкаст-технологий трансформирует традиционный процесс обучения в гибкую, студентоориентированную среду, существенно повышая общую продуктивность овладения иностранным языком.

NTRODUCTION
the integration of digital technologies has transformed English language teaching by promoting authentic communication and learner-centered instruction. Among these technologies, podcasting has become an effective tool for developing listening comprehension, pronunciation, vocabulary, communicative competence, and learner autonomy. This study examines the technical and didactic characteristics of podcast technology in English language teaching using descriptive, comparative, and analytical methods. The findings indicate that podcasting is characterized by authenticity, multifunctionality, mobility, interactivity, media integration, and multichannel learning, all of which enhance both receptive and productive language skills. The study concludes that the systematic integration of podcasts into English language instruction promotes learner autonomy, digital literacy, and communicative competence while increasing student engagement and improving overall language learning outcomes.
AIM
to classify and evaluate the key methodologically grounded approaches to using podcast technology in English language teaching and determine their impact on enhancing students' communicative competence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Grounded in Krashen's Input Hypothesis and Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, this study employed qualitative descriptive, comparative, and pedagogical analysis methods.
DISCUSSION AND RESULTS
The investigation revealed eight foundational technical and didactic characteristics of podcasts—such as authenticity, mobility, multifunctionality, interactivity, and multichannel learning—and categorized seven distinct instructional approaches. The findings show that podcasts significantly bolster listening comprehension, vocabulary retention, speaking fluency, and media literacy while encouraging collaborative project work.
CONCLUSION
Incorporating podcasts as a core methodological component rather than supplementary audio transforms modern language classrooms into flexible, autonomous environments that optimize language acquisition and digital literacy.

The integration of digital technologies into English language education has transformed traditional teaching methods by promoting authentic communication and learner-centered instruction. Among various digital tools, podcast technology has gained considerable attention due to its ability to provide authentic language input, support learner autonomy, and facilitate flexible learning environments [1, pp. 38–45; 2, pp. 271–279].
Recent studies indicate that the educational effectiveness of podcasts depends not only on technological accessibility but also on the application of appropriate teaching methodologies. Therefore, the methodological organization of podcast-assisted instruction has become an important issue in contemporary language pedagogy [3, pp. 147–154; 4, pp. 41–52].
The purpose of this study is to classify and analyze the principal methodological approaches to using podcast technology in English language teaching and to determine their contribution to communicative competence development.
The present research employed qualitative descriptive, comparative, and analytical methods. Scientific literature concerning podcast-assisted language learning, communicative language teaching, multimedia learning, and mobile-assisted language learning was systematically reviewed [1; 2; 4; 5].
The theoretical foundation of the study is based on Krashen's Input Hypothesis, Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, Communicative Language Teaching, and recent research on podcast-assisted language learning [3, pp. 12–24; 5, pp. 83–97].
The methodological classification proposed in this study includes seven instructional approaches: Receptive approach; reproductive-imitative approach; productive-creative approach; interactive-communicative approach; flipped classroom approach; differentiated learning approach; integrated approach.
Each approach was analyzed according to its instructional objectives, classroom procedures, learner activities, expected learning outcomes, and contribution to communicative competence.
The analysis further evaluates how these approaches correspond to the technical characteristics of podcast technology, including authenticity, mobility, repeatability, accessibility, learner autonomy, and multimedia integration [1, pp. 45–50; 2, pp. 276–281].
The analysis of contemporary studies demonstrates that podcast technology combines both technical and didactic characteristics, making it an effective instructional tool for English language teaching. Unlike traditional audio recordings, podcasts integrate authentic language, digital accessibility, multimedia support, and learner-centered pedagogy into a single educational environment. These characteristics contribute to the development of communicative competence while simultaneously promoting independent learning and digital literacy.
Authenticity is regarded as the most significant technical characteristic of podcast technology. Authentic podcasts provide learners with naturally occurring spoken English rather than artificially simplified educational dialogues. Native speakers communicate spontaneously using natural pronunciation, connected speech, reduced forms, hesitation markers, discourse markers, and idiomatic expressions. Such exposure familiarizes students with the linguistic features encountered in real communicative situations and prepares them for authentic interaction beyond the classroom [3, pp. 39–46; 6, pp. 12–24].
According to Krashen's Input Hypothesis, successful second language acquisition depends largely on comprehensible input presented slightly above the learner's current proficiency level. Podcasts provide unlimited authentic input across different proficiency levels and thematic areas, enabling students to select materials appropriate to their linguistic needs [6, pp. 12–24]. Rosell-Aguilar further emphasizes that authentic podcast materials increase learners' confidence by exposing them to realistic speech rather than textbook-based conversations [3, pp. 40–48].
From a didactic perspective, authenticity contributes significantly to communicative competence. Students gradually acquire natural pronunciation, rhythm, intonation, lexical chunks, and conversational strategies through repeated listening. Authentic podcast materials also expose learners to various English accents and sociocultural contexts, thereby improving intercultural communicative competence [4, pp. 8–18; 3, pp. 45–49].
One of the distinguishing characteristics of podcast technology is its multifunctionality. Unlike conventional listening exercises that focus primarily on receptive skills, podcasts facilitate the simultaneous development of listening comprehension, pronunciation, vocabulary acquisition, speaking, note-taking, critical thinking, and intercultural awareness [2, pp. 147–153; 3, pp. 46–49].
Educational podcasts can be integrated into all stages of language instruction. During pre-listening activities, teachers activate students' background knowledge through prediction tasks and vocabulary exercises. While-listening activities encourage learners to identify main ideas, supporting details, and discourse markers. Finally, post-listening activities promote productive language use through discussions, presentations, debates, summaries, and reflective speaking tasks [4, pp. 16–24].
Furthermore, podcast technology supports differentiated instruction because learners may select materials according to their proficiency levels, interests, and learning objectives. Such flexibility enables teachers to design personalized learning experiences that address diverse educational needs [2, pp. 155–160].
Another important technical characteristic of podcast technology is its relevance. Podcast platforms continuously publish new episodes covering current social, economic, technological, scientific, and cultural issues. Consequently, students encounter contemporary vocabulary and expressions actively used in today's English-speaking communities [4, pp. 20–26].
Current educational theories emphasize that meaningful learning occurs when instructional materials relate to learners' personal interests and real-life experiences. Podcast topics such as artificial intelligence, environmental protection, global education, business, healthcare, and culture encourage students to participate actively in classroom discussions because the content reflects contemporary society [1, pp. 48–52].
The relevance of podcast content also increases learner motivation. Students demonstrate greater engagement when listening materials correspond to their academic specialization or future professional activities. Therefore, podcasts successfully bridge the gap between classroom instruction and authentic language use [3, pp. 46–50].
Modern education requires students to possess not only linguistic competence but also media competence. Podcast technology contributes significantly to digital literacy because learners actively search for educational resources, evaluate information reliability, compare digital sources, and create multimedia content [8, pp. 560–567].
Students become active producers rather than passive consumers of digital information. They learn to subscribe to educational channels, organize digital learning resources, evaluate the credibility of podcast creators, and apply critical thinking while interpreting multimedia information [2, pp. 180–185].
From the didactic perspective, podcast production itself represents an effective project-based learning activity. Students collaboratively prepare scripts, record audio materials, edit digital content, and publish educational podcasts. Such activities simultaneously develop language proficiency, communication skills, teamwork, creativity, and technological competence [8, pp. 565–570].
Podcast technology supports multichannel information processing by combining auditory, textual, visual, and interactive learning resources. Contemporary podcast platforms frequently provide transcripts, subtitles, illustrations, vocabulary lists, and comprehension exercises accompanying audio materials [7, pp. 83–97].
According to Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, information is processed more effectively when learners receive verbal and visual input simultaneously. The integration of multiple learning channels reduces cognitive overload while improving comprehension, memory retention, and vocabulary acquisition [7, pp. 41–52].
Multichannel learning is particularly beneficial for foreign language learners because transcripts assist students in recognizing unfamiliar vocabulary, while subtitles facilitate pronunciation and listening comprehension. Consequently, podcast technology accommodates different learning styles and promotes inclusive language instruction [2, pp. 149–154].
Mobility represents one of the greatest technological advantages of podcast-assisted language learning. Unlike traditional classroom instruction, podcasts enable students to access educational materials at any time and from any location using smartphones, tablets, or laptops [5, pp. 273–281].
The flexibility of mobile learning supports lifelong education by allowing learners to continue practicing English outside formal educational settings. Students may listen to podcasts while travelling, exercising, or performing everyday activities. This continuous exposure substantially increases the amount of authentic language input received during the learning process [5, pp. 275–279].
Furthermore, mobile learning promotes learner autonomy because students independently regulate the pace of instruction. They may pause, replay, accelerate, or slow down recordings according to individual learning needs, thereby creating personalized learning experiences [3, pp. 47–50].
Podcast technology transforms learners from passive listeners into active participants in the educational process. Instead of merely consuming information, students summarize podcast episodes, prepare presentations, participate in discussions, record reflective responses, and create their own educational podcasts [3, pp. 46–51].
Student-generated podcasts represent an effective project-based learning strategy because learners apply acquired vocabulary and communicative strategies while producing authentic oral discourse. These productive activities significantly improve speaking fluency, pronunciation accuracy, and self-confidence [2, pp. 165–171].
Moreover, podcast production encourages collaborative learning. Students negotiate ideas, exchange feedback, solve communication problems, and develop critical thinking while working together on multimedia projects [8, pp. 564–569].
Modern podcast platforms offer numerous opportunities for interaction between teachers and learners. Interactive features include discussion forums, online comments, quizzes, collaborative tasks, peer assessment, and teacher feedback [3, pp. 48–51].
Interactive learning environments increase learner motivation because students actively participate in knowledge construction rather than passively receiving information. Collaborative discussions encourage communication, reflection, and critical evaluation of ideas, which are essential components of communicative language teaching [4, pp. 18– 24].
Teacher feedback integrated into podcast-based activities further improves learning outcomes by providing immediate guidance and opportunities for self-assessment. Consequently, podcast technology supports continuous formative assessment throughout the instructional process [2, pp. 176–181].
The present study has demonstrated that podcast technology represents an innovative and pedagogically effective instructional tool for English language teaching. The analysis identified eight fundamental technical and didactic characteristics of podcasting: authenticity, multifunctionality, relevance, media competence, multichannel learning, mobility, productivity, and interactivity. Together, these characteristics create an educational environment that supports learner-centered instruction, authentic communication, and autonomous language learning [2, pp. 180–185; 3, pp. 49–51].
From a technical perspective, podcasts provide authentic multimedia resources that are easily accessible through digital and mobile technologies. Their flexibility enables learners to regulate their own learning process while increasing exposure to authentic spoken English. From a didactic perspective, podcast-assisted instruction contributes significantly to the development of listening comprehension, pronunciation, vocabulary acquisition, speaking fluency, communicative competence, critical thinking, media literacy, and independent learning [5, pp. 273–281; 7, pp. 83–97].
The findings suggest that podcast technology should not be regarded merely as supplementary listening material but rather as an integral component of modern English language methodology. Systematic integration of podcasts into classroom instruction through carefully designed pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening activities can substantially improve language learning outcomes and better prepare students for authentic communication in multilingual digital environments.
Future research may investigate the empirical effectiveness of podcast-assisted instruction among English language learners at different proficiency levels and explore its impact on speaking performance, learner motivation, and digital competence in higher education.
