INTRODUCTION: online learning has become an essential component of modern education, offering flexibility and wider access to learning opportunities. However, despite its advantages, low student engagement remains one of the most significant challenges in online education. Many learners demonstrate passive participation, low motivation, and limited application of acquired knowledge, which negatively affects learning outcomes. This thesis examines the key factors contributing to low student engagement in online learning, including limited interaction, insufficient self-regulation skills, passive learning methods, and technological barriers. The paper also proposes effective solutions such as interactive course design, structured learning environments, active learning strategies, continuous feedback, and improved technological support. Addressing these issues is crucial for improving the quality, effectiveness, and sustainability of online education. AIM: to develop and recommend effective methodological approaches to help students develop critical thinking in teaching English on online platforms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: the article analyzes the literature, explores the capabilities of online platforms, and explores practical methods based on modern pedagogy, digital learning, and critical thinking theories. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS: learning English online has its own advantages. Students noted that they increased their learning efficiency by using online resources along with traditional methods. This, in turn, creates opportunities for independent learning and application of knowledge in practice. CONCLUSION: teaching English in online education enhances students' professional thinking, develops independent decision-making, and serves to develop reliable information competencies.
