INTRODUCTION
the rapid development of digital technologies and the widespread integration of artificial intelligence-based tools into the educational process have created new pedagogical opportunities for improving foreign language teaching methodology, particularly English language instruction. In particular, generative artificial intelligence platforms such as ChatGPT, along with speech recognition technologies, automated writing assessment tools, and adaptive learning technologies, are becoming important didactic tools for organizing instruction according to students’ individual needs, providing immediate feedback, developing oral and written language skills, adapting learning materials, and supporting independent learning activities. At the same time, the use of artificial intelligence in education raises a number of pedagogical and ethical challenges related to inaccurate or unreliable information, fabricated sources, academic integrity, data privacy, copyright, and equal access to technology. Therefore, developing principles for the purposeful, critical, and responsible use of artificial intelligence in the preparation of future English language teachers at pedagogical universities, as well as identifying its didactic potential as a means of enhancing educational effectiveness rather than replacing the professional role of teachers, represents one of the current priorities in educational research.
AIM
the purpose of this study is to examine the didactic opportunities of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence platforms in English language teaching at a pedagogical university in Uzbekistan. The research focuses on the potential of AI to support personalized learning, immediate feedback, language-skill development, lesson-material creation, learner autonomy, and differentiated instruction. It also aims to identify the pedagogical, ethical, and institutional conditions required for effective AI integration, including output verification, data privacy, academic integrity, equitable technological access, and the continuing role of teachers and peer interaction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
the study employed a mixed-methods, quasiexperimental design involving undergraduate English language education students and their instructors. The experimental group completed structured activities using ChatGPT, speech-recognition applications, automated writing tools, and adaptive learning platforms, while the comparison group studied comparable content through conventional instructional methods. Data were collected through diagnostic and final language tasks, analytical portfolios, focus-group discussions, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed comparatively, while qualitative materials were coded thematically and triangulated. Students were required to verify AI outputs, disclose assistance, protect sensitive information, and retain responsibility for their submitted work.
DISCUSSION AND RESULTS
the findings showed that structured AI-assisted instruction supported stronger development in productive language skills, vocabulary use, revision practices, confidence, and learner autonomy. Students valued the ability to receive personalized explanations, practice speaking in a low-pressure environment, adapt task difficulty, and obtain immediate feedback. Future teachers also used AI effectively to create lesson ideas, role-play scenarios, adapted texts, and differentiated exercises. However, the study identified inaccurate explanations, fabricated references, culturally inappropriate content, unnatural language suggestions, unequal technological access, and uncertainty about acceptable AI assistance. The results indicate that AI platforms are most effective when students first attempt tasks independently, critically evaluate generated responses, consult reliable sources, discuss alternatives with peers, and receive teacher guidance.
CONCLUSION
ChatGPT and other AI platforms offer significant didactic opportunities for English language teaching, but their educational effectiveness depends on purposeful and ethically responsible integration. AI can supplement instruction through personalization, formative feedback, conversational practice, material adaptation, and independent learning; however, it cannot replace professional teacher judgment or authentic human communication. Pedagogical universities should develop clear policies on privacy, authorship, disclosure, copyright, assessment, and academic integrity while providing instructors and students with systematic AI-literacy training. When AI-supported activities are aligned with learning objectives and combined with verification, reflection, collaboration, and teacher supervision, these technologies can strengthen language competence and prepare future English teachers for responsible professional practice.

ВВЕДЕНИЕ
в условиях стремительного развития цифровых технологий и широкого внедрения инструментов на основе искусственного интеллекта в образовательный процесс открываются новые педагогические возможности для совершенствования методики преподавания иностранных языков, в частности английского языка. Особенно генеративные платформы искусственного интеллекта, такие как ChatGPT, а также технологии распознавания речи, автоматизированной оценки письменных работ и адаптивного обучения становятся важными дидактическими средствами, позволяющими организовать обучение с учетом индивидуальных потребностей студентов, обеспечивать оперативную обратную связь, развивать навыки устной и письменной речи, адаптировать учебные материалы и поддерживать самостоятельную учебную деятельность. Вместе с тем использование искусственного интеллекта в образовательном процессе порождает ряд педагогических и этических проблем, связанных с недостоверной или ошибочной информацией, фиктивными источниками, академической добросовестностью, конфиденциальностью данных, авторскими правами и равным доступом к технологиям. В связи с этим разработка принципов целенаправленного, критического и ответственного использования искусственного интеллекта в процессе подготовки будущих учителей английского языка в педагогических университетах, а также определение его дидактического потенциала как средства повышения эффективности обучения, а не замены профессиональной деятельности преподавателя, является одной из актуальных научно-педагогических задач.
ЦЕЛЬ
целью данного исследования является изучение дидактических возможностей ChatGPT и других платформ с искусственным интеллектом в преподавании английского языка в педагогическом университете Узбекистана. Исследование сосредоточено на потенциале ИИ для поддержки персонализированного обучения, мгновенной обратной связи, развития языковых навыков, создания учебных материалов, автономии учащихся и дифференцированного обучения. Исследование также направлено на выявление педагогических, этических и институциональных условий, необходимых для эффективной интеграции ИИ, включая проверку результатов, конфиденциальность данных, академическую честность, равный доступ к технологиям и сохраняющуюся роль преподавателей и взаимодействия между сверстниками.
МАТЕРИАЛЫ И МЕТОДЫ
в исследовании использовался смешанный квазиэкспериментальный дизайн с участием студентов бакалавриата, изучающих английский язык и литературу, и их преподавателей. Экспериментальная группа выполняла структурированные задания с использованием ChatGPT, приложений распознавания речи, автоматизированных инструментов для письма и адаптивных обучающих платформ, в то время как контрольная группа изучала аналогичный контент с помощью традиционных методов обучения. Данные собирались с помощью диагностических и итоговых языковых заданий, аналитических оценочных критериев, анкет, наблюдений за занятиями, дневников учащихся, цифровых портфолио, фокус-групповых дискуссий и полуструктурированных интервью. Количественные данные анализировались сравнительно, а качественные материалы кодировались тематически и подвергались триангуляции. Студенты должны были проверять результаты работы ИИ, сообщать о полученной помощи, защищать конфиденциальную информацию и нести ответственность за представленную работу.
ОБСУЖДЕНИЕ И РЕЗУЛЬТАТЫ
результаты показали, что структурированное обучение с использованием ИИ способствовало более эффективному развитию продуктивных языковых навыков, использованию лексики, практике редактирования, уверенности в себе и самостоятельности учащихся. Студенты высоко оценили возможность получать персонализированные объяснения, практиковать разговорную речь в непринужденной обстановке, адаптировать сложность заданий и получать немедленную обратную связь. Будущие учителя также эффективно использовали ИИ для создания идей уроков, сценариев ролевых игр, адаптированных текстов и дифференцированных упражнений. Однако исследование выявило неточные объяснения, сфабрикованные ссылки, культурно неадекватный контент, неестественные языковые предложения, неравный доступ к технологиям и неуверенность в приемлемости помощи ИИ. Результаты показывают, что платформы ИИ наиболее эффективны, когда студенты сначала пытаются выполнить задания самостоятельно, критически оценивают полученные ответы, консультируются с надежными источниками, обсуждают альтернативы со сверстниками и получают руководство учителя.
ЗАКЛЮЧЕНИЕ
ChatGPT и другие платформы ИИ предоставляют значительные дидактические возможности для преподавания английского языка, но их эффективность в образовании зависит от целенаправленной и этически ответственной интеграции. Искусственный интеллект может дополнять обучение посредством персонализации, формирующей обратной связи, разговорной практики, адаптации материалов и самостоятельного обучения; однако он не может заменить профессиональное суждение преподавателя или подлинное человеческое общение. Педагогические университеты должны разработать четкие правила в отношении конфиденциальности, авторства, раскрытия информации, авторского права, оценки и академической честности, одновременно обеспечивая преподавателей и студентов систематической подготовкой по использованию ИИ. Когда поддерживаемые ИИ виды деятельности согласованы с целями обучения и сочетаются с проверкой, рефлексией, сотрудничеством и контролем со стороны преподавателей, эти технологии могут укрепить языковую компетенцию и подготовить будущих учителей английского языка к ответственной профессиональной практике.

Artificial intelligence is transforming English language teaching by expanding the ways in which learners interact with language, receive feedback, and participate in communicative activities. Generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT can produce explanations, dialogues, examples, exercises, summaries, and responses to learner questions in real time. Other AI-supported systems provide speech recognition, pronunciation analysis, adaptive vocabulary practice, translation, automated writing feedback, and personalized learning recommendations. These capabilities create opportunities to supplement classroom teaching and extend language practice beyond scheduled lessons.
The didactic value of AI lies partly in its capacity to respond to individual learning needs. Students in the same classroom often differ in proficiency, motivation, learning pace, vocabulary knowledge, and confidence. A teacher may find it difficult to provide each learner with continuous individualized support, particularly in large groups. AI platforms can generate tasks at different levels, simplify texts, provide additional examples, simulate conversations, and offer immediate feedback. Learners can repeat activities without embarrassment and request alternative explanations when they do not understand a concept. Such flexibility may promote autonomy and increase the amount of meaningful language practice.
ChatGPT can support the development of receptive and productive skills. In reading instruction, it can generate comprehension questions, explain unfamiliar expressions, and compare interpretations. For listening and speaking, AI-supported tools can create dialogue scenarios, simulate role-play, and provide pronunciation feedback. In writing, students can use AI to brainstorm, develop outlines, examine alternative formulations, and revise drafts. Vocabulary and grammar activities can be contextualized according to students’ interests or professional fields. Future English teachers may also use AI to prepare lesson plans, adapt materials, create assessment tasks, and anticipate learner difficulties.
These opportunities are accompanied by significant limitations. Generative AI can produce inaccurate, biased, culturally inappropriate, or fabricated information. Its language may appear authoritative even when the content is unreliable. Excessive dependence on automated assistance can weaken independent thinking, reduce productive struggle, and obscure a student’s actual competence. AI-generated assignments also raise questions about authorship, plagiarism, privacy, data protection, copyright, and fairness of assessment. Access to devices, reliable internet connections, and paid platform features may differ among learners, creating additional inequalities.
Effective integration therefore requires more than allowing students to use available applications. Teachers must select tools according to clear learning objectives and design tasks that require verification, reflection, interaction, and personal contribution. Students need AI literacy, including the ability to formulate effective prompts, evaluate outputs, recognize limitations, disclose assistance, and retain responsibility for their work. Teacher feedback, peer communication, authentic materials, and direct human interaction remain essential because language education involves social, cultural, emotional, and ethical dimensions that automated systems cannot fully reproduce.
In Uzbekistan, the digitalization of higher education and growing interest in AI create favorable conditions for pedagogical innovation. Pedagogical universities have a particular responsibility to prepare future English teachers for informed and responsible technology use. This study examines the didactic opportunities of ChatGPT and other AI platforms in English language teaching. It focuses on personalization, feedback, language-skill development, material creation, learner autonomy, assessment, teacher preparation, and ethical practice. It also considers the institutional conditions necessary for ensuring that AI supports rather than replaces meaningful teaching and learning.
The study employed a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design to examine the didactic opportunities of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence platforms in English language teaching. Quantitative methods were used to compare changes in students’ language performance and engagement, while qualitative methods explored their experiences, learning strategies, and attitudes toward AI-assisted instruction. The research was conducted during an academic semester at a pedagogical university in Uzbekistan. Participants included undergraduate students specializing in English language education and instructors teaching practical English and language methodology courses.
Existing classes were assigned to experimental and comparison conditions without changing the university’s regular academic structure. Both groups studied comparable content and completed tasks targeting reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, grammar, and lesson-planning competence. The comparison group received instruction through teacher explanations, textbooks, classroom exercises, peer work, and conventional digital resources. The experimental group followed an integrated model in which ChatGPT and selected AI platforms were used for clearly defined instructional purposes alongside teacher guidance and collaborative learning.
AI-assisted instruction included personalized grammar explanations, vocabulary activities, reading questions, dialogue simulations, pronunciation practice, writing feedback, text adaptation, and lesson-material development. Students used ChatGPT to generate examples, explore alternative expressions, create role-play situations, compare text structures, and receive formative feedback. Speech-recognition tools supported pronunciation and speaking practice, while automated writing applications helped learners identify possible grammatical and stylistic problems. Adaptive platforms provided vocabulary and comprehension tasks matched to students’ proficiency and progress.
Each AI-assisted activity followed a structured sequence. Students first completed a task independently or discussed it with peers. They then interacted with an AI platform using teacher-approved prompts. After receiving a response, they checked its accuracy, compared it with textbooks, dictionaries, reliable sources, or teacher explanations, and revised the output when necessary. Students documented significant prompts and explained whether they accepted, modified, or rejected the generated suggestions. This procedure was intended to develop critical AI literacy and prevent passive dependence on automated responses.
Data were collected through diagnostic and final language tasks, analytical portfolios, focus-group discussions, and semi-structured teacher interviews. Writing was evaluated according to content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, coherence, and revision quality. Speaking assessment considered fluency, pronunciation, accuracy, interaction, and communicative effectiveness. Reading and listening tasks measured comprehension, inference, interpretation, and vocabulary in context. Portfolios included original work, AI-supported drafts, feedback records, revised products, lesson materials, and reflective explanations.
Classroom observations focused on engagement, interaction, autonomy, prompt formulation, verification behavior, and the teacher’s role. Questionnaires examined perceived usefulness, ease of use, confidence, motivation, accessibility, ethical awareness, and dependence on AI. Interviews explored instructors’ perceptions of pedagogical value, assessment, academic integrity, privacy, professional preparation, and institutional support. Quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive and comparative procedures. Qualitative materials were coded thematically and triangulated with performance data and observation records.
Participants received guidance on privacy, copyright, source verification, authorship, and responsible AI use before the intervention. They were instructed not to enter sensitive personal information into external platforms. AI assistance had to be disclosed in assessed work, and students remained responsible for the accuracy and originality of submitted materials. Participation was voluntary, identities were protected, and data were reported only in aggregated form.
The diagnostic assessment showed that students in the experimental and comparison groups had broadly similar levels of English proficiency before the intervention. Participants demonstrated stronger performance in routine grammar and vocabulary exercises than in extended speaking, source-based writing, spontaneous interaction, and independent lesson-material design. Initial questionnaire responses revealed considerable interest in artificial intelligence, although students differed in their previous experience. Many had used ChatGPT for translation, summarization, or assignment preparation but possessed limited knowledge of prompt design, output verification, data privacy, and disclosure requirements.
Following the instructional period, students in both groups demonstrated progress, but the experimental group showed stronger development in productive language skills, vocabulary use, revision behavior, and learner autonomy. Students who completed structured AI-assisted activities produced more detailed written texts, used a wider range of expressions, and made more purposeful revisions. Their speaking performance also improved in fluency and confidence, particularly among learners who regularly practiced dialogues and role-play situations with conversational AI tools. Pronunciation applications helped students identify recurring difficulties and repeat problematic words or phrases privately.
Personalization emerged as one of the most valued didactic opportunities. Students used AI platforms to request simpler explanations, additional examples, alternative exercises, and tasks related to their interests or future teaching fields. Learners with lower confidence benefited from repeated practice without fear of public correction, while more proficient students requested complex texts, idiomatic language, debate questions, and advanced writing challenges. Classroom observations indicated that personalized tasks increased participation when they remained connected to shared course objectives.
AI-supported feedback influenced students’ revision practices. Instead of correcting only grammar and spelling, many learners reconsidered vocabulary, organization, clarity, and audience suitability. Comparing their original work with automated suggestions encouraged discussion about why one formulation might be more appropriate than another. However, students did not evaluate all feedback accurately. Some accepted formal or unnatural expressions because they assumed that AI-generated language was automatically superior. Teacher review and peer discussion helped learners identify unsuitable recommendations and preserve their intended meaning.
The structured verification procedure improved critical use of AI outputs. Students gradually became more likely to compare responses with dictionaries, textbooks, trusted websites, or other sources. They identified examples of invented references, inaccurate explanations, inconsistent answers, and culturally inappropriate content. Reflective journals showed that learners increasingly understood the importance of asking precise questions, checking information, and maintaining responsibility for the final product. Nevertheless, verification remained less consistent when students worked under time pressure or used AI outside supervised activities.
Future teachers found AI particularly useful for generating lesson ideas, adapting reading texts, creating role-play scenarios, and preparing differentiated exercises. Their later materials demonstrated clearer alignment with learner levels and greater variety than their initial lesson-planning tasks. At the same time, some AI-generated exercises contained ambiguous instructions, incorrect answer keys, or vocabulary unsuitable for the intended proficiency level. Students who applied pedagogical criteria and tested materials before use produced stronger results.
Questionnaire and interview data revealed increased motivation, confidence, and willingness to practice independently. The main challenges included unstable internet access, unequal availability of devices, differing levels of digital competence, occasional platform restrictions, distraction, and uncertainty about acceptable AI assistance. Teachers also reported that monitoring AI-supported work required new assessment procedures. Process documentation, oral follow-up questions, classroom performance, and reflective explanations helped distinguish genuine learning from uncritical submission of generated content. The results showed that AI platforms were most beneficial when embedded in structured tasks combining independent effort, verification, peer interaction, and teacher guidance.
The findings demonstrate that ChatGPT and other AI platforms can expand opportunities for English language learning when their use is guided by clear pedagogical objectives. Students receiving structured AI-assisted instruction showed stronger development in productive skills, vocabulary, revision, confidence, and autonomy. These outcomes support the view that generative AI can function as an interactive learning resource capable of providing language examples, personalized practice, immediate responses, and simulated communication. However, the benefits resulted from the instructional design surrounding the technology rather than from unrestricted access to AI.
Personalization was especially valuable in classes containing students with different proficiency levels and learning needs. AI platforms enabled learners to adjust task complexity, request additional explanations, and practice language at an appropriate pace. This flexibility can support differentiated instruction without requiring the teacher to prepare a separate set of materials for every student. Nevertheless, personalization should remain connected to shared curriculum objectives. Learners may otherwise select only easy or entertaining activities and avoid areas requiring sustained effort.
The improvement in speaking confidence suggests that conversational AI can provide a useful supplementary environment for rehearsal. Students can repeat dialogues, experiment with vocabulary, and prepare for classroom communication without anxiety about immediate public evaluation. Speech-recognition and pronunciation tools can also provide frequent practice that may be difficult to organize individually in large groups. However, interaction with AI does not fully reproduce human communication. Real conversation involves emotion, cultural interpretation, gesture, misunderstanding, negotiation, and interpersonal responsibility. AI practice should therefore prepare students for communication with people rather than replace collaborative classroom interaction.
Automated feedback encouraged students to revise their work more frequently, but the findings revealed that learners sometimes accepted unsuitable suggestions. This problem is particularly important in language education because a grammatically possible sentence may be inappropriate for the intended meaning, audience, genre, or cultural context. Teachers should train students to treat automated feedback as a proposal requiring evaluation. Comparing original and revised versions, explaining decisions, and discussing alternatives can turn feedback into an opportunity for language awareness rather than mechanical correction.
The verification activities developed critical AI literacy. Students learned that fluent responses could contain factual errors, invented references, oversimplifications, and hidden bias. Prompting skill was useful, but it did not eliminate the need to evaluate outputs. Effective AI literacy includes understanding system limitations, comparing information with reliable sources, protecting personal data, acknowledging assistance, and accepting responsibility for submitted work. These competencies align with humancentered approaches to AI in education promoted by UNESCO (Miao & Holmes, 2023).
The use of AI for lesson planning was particularly relevant to future English teachers. ChatGPT could rapidly generate exercises, dialogues, assessment items, and adapted texts, reducing preparation time and encouraging experimentation. Yet generated materials required professional judgment because they sometimes contained unclear instructions, inappropriate difficulty, or incorrect answers. Teacher education should therefore develop students’ ability to evaluate materials according to learning objectives, linguistic accuracy, inclusiveness, cultural suitability, and assessment validity.
Implementation in pedagogical universities in Uzbekistan requires attention to access and institutional consistency. Differences in devices, connectivity, digital competence, and platform availability may create unequal learning conditions. Universities need shared guidance on acceptable AI use, privacy, disclosure, authorship, and assessment. Teacher professional development should address prompt design, verification, task construction, and alternative assessment methods. The present study was limited to one educational context and a relatively short intervention. Further research could examine long-term language development, different proficiency groups, multilingual use, and the influence of AI-supported instruction during school teaching practice.
The study examined the didactic opportunities of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence platforms in English language teaching at a pedagogical university. The findings showed that AI-supported instruction can strengthen language learning by providing personalized practice, immediate feedback, adaptable materials, conversational simulations, and opportunities for independent study. Students who participated in structured AI-assisted activities demonstrated progress in writing, speaking, vocabulary use, revision behavior, confidence, and learner autonomy.
Personalization represents one of the most important educational advantages of AI. Students can request explanations at an appropriate level, generate additional examples, adjust the complexity of tasks, and practice according to individual needs. This flexibility is valuable in mixed-ability classes where teachers may have limited time to prepare differentiated activities. Nevertheless, teachers must ensure that personalized tasks remain connected to curriculum objectives and gradually increase in complexity. AI should help students engage with challenging content rather than allow them to avoid it.
ChatGPT and conversational platforms can supplement speaking instruction by generating dialogues, role-play situations, discussion questions, and professional communication scenarios. They offer a low-pressure environment in which students can rehearse language and build confidence before interacting with classmates. Speechrecognition and pronunciation tools provide repeated practice and immediate responses. However, artificial interaction cannot replace communication with teachers and peers. Human conversation remains essential for developing empathy, cultural awareness, negotiation skills, and the ability to respond to unpredictable social meanings.
AI platforms can also improve writing instruction by supporting brainstorming, outlining, language comparison, feedback, and revision. Their suggestions should be treated as possibilities rather than authoritative corrections. Students must evaluate whether generated language accurately expresses their ideas and suits the intended purpose, audience, and genre. Requiring learners to explain accepted and rejected suggestions can preserve authorial responsibility and turn automated feedback into an opportunity for critical language analysis.
Future English teachers can use AI to adapt texts, create exercises, generate assessment tasks, develop lesson plans, and prepare differentiated materials. These functions may reduce routine preparation time and allow teachers to explore a wider variety of activities. Every generated resource must still be checked for linguistic accuracy, pedagogical value, cultural appropriateness, inclusiveness, and alignment with learning outcomes. Professional judgment remains more important than the speed with which content can be produced.
Responsible use requires comprehensive AI literacy. Students need to formulate effective prompts, verify information, recognize hallucinations and bias, protect personal data, respect copyright, disclose relevant assistance, and maintain academic integrity. Universities should establish clear policies explaining acceptable and unacceptable practices. Assessment should include classroom performance, oral explanation, process documentation, portfolios, and reflection so that students demonstrate their own learning rather than merely present polished generated products.
Pedagogical universities in Uzbekistan should provide professional development for instructors, equitable access to digital resources, and institution-wide ethical guidance. AIrelated competence should be integrated into practical English, teaching methodology, educational technology, and assessment courses. Localized examples and multilingual support can help future teachers adapt international technologies to national educational needs.
Further research should investigate sustained effects on language proficiency, differences among learner groups, and the transfer of AI competence to school classrooms. Comparative studies of specific platforms and instructional designs could clarify which combinations of human and automated support are most effective. ChatGPT and other AI platforms offer substantial didactic opportunities, but their educational value depends on purposeful teaching, critical evaluation, ethical responsibility, and the continued central role of human interaction.
